
For a few thousand years, from about 3000BC, physicians believed that the body needed to have a balance of four main “humours” in order to maintain good health.
The humours were blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile .
Treatment was decided by regulating the causative unbalanced humour:
Choleric- Phlegmatic- Sanguine-Melancholic, and consisted of bloodletting, purging, starving or vomiting.
